Why would a company with headquarters in Israel choose to open its U.S. headquarters in Cleveland? And how could that company continue to grow when so many others were chewed up and spit out in the teeth of the recession?
For Simbionix USA Corp., both of those questions can be answered with an identical and relatively simple response.
Simbionix manufactures medical simulation products. More specifically, it is the leading provider of innovative and effective virtual reality simulation products and solutions for clinical education and training of medical professionals. The company maintains headquarters in Israel and Cleveland — in addition to a development team in Denver — and opted for Cleveland over other cities because of its hospitals and strong medical community.
Simbionix has expanded markedly during the 13 years since Ran Bronstein co-founded the company and during the four years since Gary Zamler arrived as CEO. The company has developed products that have garnered more than 20 patents and pending and provisional applications, accelerated best practices medical training, advanced clinical performance and improved patient safety. Today, the company operates more than 700 simulators in hospitals in more than 35 nations worldwide.
Bronstein and Zamler have already helped to commercialize numerous hands-on simulation technologies that offer clinicians realistic, reliable, comprehensive and safe platforms for learning, studying and practicing complex, minimally invasive surgical procedures, and more development is on the way.
Simbionix is also in the process of introducing a program that allows continuing medical education participants to study content, then dive in for hands-on simulated experience and be evaluated and graded automatically throughout the process. By combining its traditional simulators with clinical content and skills assessment, Simbionix has gained access to the $2 billion continuing medical education industry.
So, are there any more questions about why a company like Simbionix would open up shop in Cleveland? Or how it has managed to stick around? Didn’t think so.
