The Perkins family will forever be tied to Akron because they literally helped put the city on the map.
“In reading [history books] they all speak highly of the Perkins family,” says Leianne Neff Heppner, president and CEO of the Summit County Historical Society of Akron. “In some regard, they hold them in high esteem for their giving nature to the community. Instead of thinking of them as individuals who own most of the land, they were looked upon for what they gave.”
She says three generations of Perkins gave land for parks, helped establish schools and were involved in bringing major businesses to the area.
