Striking a chord

When Steven R. Springsteel took the
reins as president and CEO of Chordiant
Software Inc. in February 2006, the company’s situation didn’t look good. It lacked
revenue growth, had mounting losses and
possessed a back-office operation that
was in shambles. In short, people questioned the company’s viability.

The first thing Springsteel did to start
leading a turnaround was visit with customers around the world in order to listen
to their needs and strengthen relationships with them. One of the processes he
implemented was that, going forward,
about 50 percent of future product design
and capability would be driven by customer input.

He also quickly built a new leadership
team and brought in top software industry executives with the experience,
skills and integrity to scale the company
globally.

He introduced initiatives to increase
accountability while reshaping the back
office by establishing goals and timetables across every function. He also
made sure he was the first one in the
office every morning and the last one
out so people saw his commitment and
would get on board.

These and other efforts have paid off for
Chordiant. Last year, the company had
four consecutive record quarters of
growth and profit. Now that it’s strong,
focused and successful, Springsteel hopes
to expand into new geographical markets
and continue developing relationships
with partners and customers.
