Showing they care

Hattie Larlham is way more than just a
place where families can bring their loved
ones with mental retardation and developmental disabilities.

Employees recognize how much these people are treasured by their families, and they
know how difficult it can be for these family
members to be brought out of their home to
a place where they don’t know anyone.

But CEO Dennis Allen ensures that
employees are constantly looking for ways to
provide better service. They are engaged
with the families of clients to make sure that
each individual is receiving the best and most
appropriate care.

The nonprofit organization uses a process
called “vision casting” in which each element
of service is constantly reviewed and plans of
action are documented to ensure that everything meets the company’s vision and values.

Allen encourages independent thinking in
his employees as a means of generating fresh
and creative approaches to new situations.
By promoting an open culture, these independent ideas often coalesce into initiatives
that improve service and bring smiles to the
faces of clients and their family members.

extensive experience with Hattie Larlham.

When job candidates are brought in for an
interview, they are given a tour of the facility
and an opportunity to demonstrate their passion for the job.

The dedication is exemplified by employees such as Tim Cusik, a maintenance technician who regularly makes sure community
homes are up to code and free of any safety
violations.

But Cusik also takes time during his rounds
to interact with individuals within the homes
in an effort to get to know them better. It’s
things like that, that make Hattie Larlham a
special place.
