Robert G. Ruhlman is not afraid of a challenge.
As chairman, president and CEO of Preformed Line Products, Ruhlman
has faced tough times, and he knows that having a strong business model is
essential in helping companies survive the unpredictable storms of the corporate world.
His Mayfield Village-based company designs and manufactures products and
systems used in the energy and communications industries. The business operates under this simple model: Enhance customer service while the competition
is cutting it back and build the product locally to respond quickly to customer
needs, especially in times of emergency.
During the downturn triggered by the late-’90s telecom fallout, PLP’s competition cut employees and moved production to low-cost labor in Asia. Ruhlman
stayed true to his company’s business model and led PLP with minimal layoffs or
pay cuts. By sticking to his original plan, the company was rewarded with
increased market share that has solidified PLP’s role in these industries.
The disastrous 2005 hurricane season further proved the success of Ruhlman’s
business model. While competitors gouged prices, brought products in from
overseas and left their customers stranded, PLP reacted quickly holding prices
steady, providing locally made products and going beyond the call of duty for its
customers.
PLP’s business model provided a map for success, not only domestically but
internationally — including its 100 percent owned subsidiary in mainland China.
Last year, PLP recognized the need to push the boundaries acquired a domestic
solar power business.
Ruhlman has been instrumental in growing PLP into a publicly traded company. In addition to his solid business model, he believes that PLP has succeeded
because its work force is successful, committed and loyal, and he gives employees the authority and autonomy to do their jobs.
In addition to standard benefits, Ruhlman fosters employee loyalty by offering
tuition reimbursement, wellness programs, a patent award program and a global job sharing program.
