Karlene M. Kerfoot, senior vice president of nursing and patient care services and chief nurse executive at Clarian Health Partners, was elected to the board of directors for the American Academy of Nursing.
Kerfoot will serve a two-year term from January 2005 through December 2006. She will provide strategic direction to the AAN, as well as act as a liaison to one or more of 16 expert panels. She will ensure that the expert nursing panels are nationally positioned as authorities on their subject areas, have adequate resources and stay in sync with the overall goals of the AAN.
Her general responsibilities include planning and developing the AAN annual conference and participating in internal task forces. She will also serve on the fellow selection and special scholarship committees.
Kerfoot earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing and a master’s in psychiatric nursing from the University of Iowa; her doctorate is from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Widely published and honored for her academic and professional achievements, Kerfoot also is certified in advanced nursing administration by the American Nurses Association.
She has helped Clarian earn Magnet status from the American Nurses Credentialing Center; earned the Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award from the University of Iowa Alumni Association in 2001; earned the Pioneering Spirit award from the American Association of Critical Care Nurses in 2000; and received the Sigma Theta Tau International 1993 Mary Tolle Wright award for excellence in leadership.

James A. Coles, partner at the law firm of Bose McKinney & Evans LLP, was named to the Indiana University Research and Technology Corp. board of directors.

Coles, co-chair of the firm’s intellectual property group, received a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and his law degree from St. Louis University School of Law. He is a former adjunct professor of commercial law at Indiana University School of Business and is an adjunct professor at Indiana University School of Law.
Coles is a member of the Indiana State and Indianapolis bar associations and a former chairman of the patent, trademark and copyright sections of both associations. He is a founding member of Access Technology Across Indiana, a not-for-profit organization formed to promote scientific and technological advances, facilitate the transfer of new technologies to industry and improve the quality of life through technology.

Harry Howe was named managing principal of MindGent’s business consulting team, which provides the linkage between MindGent’s clients’ business challenges and the technical solutions provided through the company’s other lines of business. It also provides project and risk management, business resiliency services, security assessments and support for chief technology officers.
Howe has more than 20 years of experience helping businesses achieve sustained financial improvements. He has in-depth experience in strategic and technology planning, project and risk management, performance measurements and business process improvement. Howe has been with MindGent since its inception in 2001.

A graduate of Bucknell University, Howe is certified in production and inventory management by the American Production and Inventory Control Society. Patricia H. McGuffey, vice president with BoseTreacy Associates LLC, was elected vice president of the Governmental Affairs Society of Indiana.
GASI is a membership association of Indiana governmental affairs professionals that promotes and assists members in maintaining the highest degree of professional and ethical conduct in their work with all parties, especially elected and appointed leaders and other lobbying professionals.
McGuffey has more than 20 years of experience working with governmental affairs. She provides consultation in grassroots development, PAC management and political strategy, and provides legislative and regulatory representation to various clients. With particular concentration in agricultural, environmental, mental health, health and budgetary concerns, McGuffey brings a broad base of knowledge and experience to the Indiana legislature and Indiana regulatory agencies.
She is a past member of the Governor’s Juvenile Justice Advisory Board; past president of the Indianapolis Press Club; past commissioner of the Indiana Protection and Advocacy Commission; a board member of Indianapolis Symphony’s Women’s North Group; and a member of United Way’s Triad Leadership program. McGuffey is a member of the Indiana State, American and Indianapolis bar associations, and a member of the Indianapolis Bar sections, government practice, environmental law and health care.
