Leaving them in the dust

It’s a sure sign your press conference is going awry when the head honcho of one of the city’s largest businesses, not to mention the son of your organization’s majority owner, is dusting off chairs — with his own shirt.

Local media types and VIPs got to see Worthington Industries Chairman and CEO John P. McConnell do just that during a gathering earlier this summer to announce the corporate naming of the Blue Jackets’ practice rink as the CoreComm Ice Haus.

McConnell noticed the thick layer of construction dust coating the seats, but when press conference organizers failed to respond quickly, he took it upon himself to clean up. He opened the package containing his promotional golf shirt and began wiping down the chairs.

Maybe it’s a good thing he left shortly after the press conference and didn’t see many of the same media and VIPs waiting for a tour of the rink; the supply of hard hats ran out.
