The greatest leaders I know remain students of the world around them, and the lesson I carry forward every year is clear: you are never done learning. I’ve been fortunate to surround myself with extraordinary people whose insight and expertise have shaped my thinking and pushed me to be a better leader.
As I reflect on the experiences and challenges of the last year, three leadership lessons continue to guide me forward.
Set the vision, then let others excel
At the core of effective leadership is clarity: clarity of mission, values and where the organization is headed. My job is to set that vision and empower others to bring the vision to life through their own processes.
The leaders who shaped me emphasized that a company grows only when its people continue to flourish. That’s why I’ve always prioritized building teams of A+ players who elevate our work, challenge assumptions, and bring discipline and innovation to the table.
When leaders provide true clarity, trust their teams and remove barriers, something powerful happens. Accountability becomes shared, innovation becomes consistent and the full organization becomes resilient.
Be purposeful in everything you do
Purpose is the strongest filter a leader can have. Every day presents more decisions than anyone can or should try to take on. The only way to lead sustainably is to be deeply intentional about your own focus time.
I’ve long said, “If something doesn’t fit within the purpose, it’s an easy no.” That’s not just a philosophy, it’s a discipline I continue to practice every day. Purpose eliminates any outstanding noise. It speeds up decision-making. It sharpens communication. And it ensures your energy is invested where it matters most.
During some of the most challenging moments of my leadership journey, including guiding major community and philanthropic efforts through crisis, purpose provided direction. It reminded me that leadership is fundamentally about service. Not just service to the organization, but service to the people and communities who depend on its success.
Strong systems will strengthen your leadership capabilities
For more than a decade, I’ve relied on what I call my “twin engines of clarity and energy.” These are my consistent personal routines I’ve put into practice that help me to show up fully present and fully focused:
- Running 150 miles every month. This is nonnegotiable. It sharpens my mind, strengthens resilience and fuels my daily energy.
- Reading 150 books a year. Continuous learning stretches my thinking and keeps me curious, humble and open to new ideas. My love of reading has evolved into a list I share from time to time with my A+ Players at NRP. I even keep a stack of my favorite books to hand out to them in my office.
Great organizations don’t scale simply through one individual’s effort. They scale through many people’s excellence all while aligned around a clearly communicated shared vision. When leaders trust great people to do great things, they almost always will. ●
