Pittsburgh Pacesetters 2010
Honoree
For Kenneth G. Doerbecker, Perfection Services Inc. is truly a labor of love.
Upon retiring early from IBM in 1993, he realized he was not quite finished with the IT industry. He noticed the need for systems engineering services by Fortune 100 companies.
Instead of sitting back and enjoying retirement, he used the knowledge he developed at IBM to start a company that could offer systems engineering services to large Pittsburgh companies. Serving as president and CEO of PSI, he has created jobs and helped boost the local economy.
As PSI grew, Doerbecker recognized a trend that bigger companies were scaling back on the services that they provide. Looking for customers to which he could provide real value, Doerbecker successfully transformed PSI into an IT services firm addressing the needs of underserved small businesses. Doerbecker developed and continues to offer IT monitoring and reporting, automated maintenance, and remote service capabilities at an affordable price.
While most of the company’s competitors have gone out of business, PSI continues to grow at an average annual rate of 25 percent. PSI has already surpassed its 2010 predicted growth rate of 30 percent. The company has received local accolades such as being named one of Pittsburgh’s 100 fastest-growing private companies and one of its best places to work, and it was also recognized as the best networking company.
While growing the company, Doerbecker was also busy developing several Internet service companies, which he either sold or merged with PSI.
When he is not expanding the business, Doerbecker enjoys baseball and local politics. He previously served as general manager and president of the McCandless Athletic Association. While he was in charge, the association sent four teams to the PONY Baseball World Series.
In business, Doerbecker has served as the president of the Greater Pittsburgh Business Association. And on The Alternative Board, Doerbecker offers advice to growing companies as a member of a virtual board of directors. The Alternative Board advises seven organizations. These opportunities have given him a chance to influence the community in a positive way.
The entrepreneur, who once thought his business days were over at age 43, is changing the technology world in Pittsburgh, with no signs of slowing down.
