Right about now is a good time to be Kevin Surace, chairman and CEO of Serious Materials.
In April 2009, Vice President Joe Biden visited the Chicago factory where Serious Materials manufactures what he called “the most energy-efficient windows in the world.” Seven months later, Surace appeared on the cover of Inc., honored as its entrepreneur of the year for his efforts and the efforts of his company to develop green building materials. A month after that, he shared his thoughts as a guest speaker at the U.S. House of Representatives Democratic Caucus on how energy efficiency can help revitalize the national economy and spur growth during the years to come.
So much attention is fixed now on Surace, which is good news for Serious Materials. The company develops and manufactures sustainable green building materials that can reduce the effects that construction and buildings have on our climate. It is also starting to change standards in an industry where standards have been long established and where innovation comes only with a commitment to research and development.
Among other products, Serious Materials produces windows that cut heating and cooling energy costs and reduce emissions and drywall that reduces material costs and lowers carbon dioxide emissions.
Surace also makes certain that each of his more than 300 employees makes some change to reduce their figurative and literal carbon footprint. With his support, company employees founded two committees — Serious Change and Serious Good — on simple ways to save energy, conserve resources and reduce the negative effects on the environment as well as to remain involved with the same pursuits in the local community.
Surace wants to continue to revive manufacturing and reduce carbon emissions.
