In 1997, Glen Tullman brought his experience in social behavior and leadership to
bear in rebuilding Chicago-based Allscripts
from a struggling provider of prepackaged
medications that had run out of money into
one of the nation’s largest and most successful health care information technology
companies. In fact, the company is now
publicly traded on the NASDAQ under the
symbol: MDRX.
Tullman’s insight, which formed the basis
of rebuilding Allscripts, is that health care is
essentially an information business. His
vision was to leverage technology to provide physicians all the information they
need at the point of care, allowing them to
deliver the highest quality care in the most
cost-effective way — everything from the
patient’s medication history to his or her latest lab results and insurance status.
Tullman had to overcome the conventional wisdom that physicians won’t use
technology and that writing on paper is still
the solution. His business motto is “Find a
way to win” and, in 2007, the company did
just that, with earnings up 59 percent over
2006 and revenue up 24 percent — both
new records and the third consecutive year
that earnings have grown more than 50
percent. The company also recently
announced a merger with Misys
Healthcare, which doubles the company’s
size.
Thanks to his perseverance and leadership, today, more than 40,000 physicians in
more than 4,000 clinics and 700 hospitals
turn to Allscripts for help in caring for
patients and improving their business.
