Directing traffic

Start at the top. To achieve a high level of familiarity and teamwork throughout your company, you need to work closely with your top managers, sitting down with them in meetings, looking at an issue and understanding the way they feel and why. Then you need to talk about what the vision is and how it works, then making sure that they walk out of the meeting truly believing what they heard and that they truly believe that everyone is headed in the right direction for us to go.

You don’t want to dictate. We don’t dictate in this company. We bring people along. Sometimes as a leader, the suggestions that you have and the direction you need to go, it all needs to be enhanced. You need to find a separate view. That’s why, as a management team, we compile all our views together to form the best, broadest idea and direction that the company can go. It helps to hone and fine-tune everything we do. No one leader can really make all the decisions themselves. They have to look at everyone in the corporation and get an idea of how an idea or issue will affect everyone. You need to understand the full bearing of not just the short term but the long term, as well.

Remember recognition. Saying thank you allows the employee to feel like they’re totally appreciated, that their work is seen, that the person at the top is recognizing what they do. As people come to our organization, they’ve shared with me that they might not have met the CEO at their last job or the people above their particular boss may not know or recognize the things they do.

I’ve learned that saying thank you as a leader makes employees feel really good about their jobs, makes them feel good about themselves in that they have a sense of accomplishment.

Another thing we do is we tie everyone in to the profitability of the company, we bonus them on the whole profitability of the company. As much as people are accolade-driven, we all have financial needs today. So it’s important to reward them financially and to recognize them at least yearly or quarterly. Do both, so they have the financial reward, and they’re also aware that they’re doing a great job.
