When the weather turns cold, Dominion East Ohio wants to be there for its 1.2 million customers and provide the natural gas that keeps their homes warm and toasty. But as important as that responsibility is, the company has never been satisfied just being a natural gas utility.
The company has made a continuous effort since the first pipelines were planted back in 1898 to be an active and engaged member of the community. One of the priorities of support for the company’s president, Bruce Klink, has been children.
Each year, Dominion East Ohio sponsors Stuff the Bus for Cleveland’s Kids. In conjunction with the Downtown Cleveland Alliance and the Cuyahoga County Board of Developmental Disabilities, supporters are asked to come out and fill an entire school bus with new shoes, new clothes and school supplies.
This year, the company was able to provide $15,000 to the effort to make sure children had what they needed to succeed in the classroom.
Dominion East Ohio also sponsors educational programs at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History and numerous schools in Northeast Ohio through combined contributions of $75,000.
At the higher education level, the company provided $5,000 to help the University of Akron’s Women in Engineering program’s Summer Engineering Camp for Girls.
The company also sponsored the Summer Undergraduate Research in Energy and Sustainability program at Case Western Reserve University. It engages students, staff, faculty and community members in discussions and debates about energy and sustainability issues. It also provides students with exposure to technological and policy-driven solutions and gives them an opportunity to make presentations of their own on these important issues.
It’s programs such as these and the thousands of hours of volunteer service by Dominion East Ohio employees that help people see the company in another light. By using its prominence and name in the region, the company is able to make things happen that help people in the areas they serve have a better life.
The company’s annual signature event, “Putting Our Energy to Work for the Environment,” brought together 50 employees in Stark County last fall to mend fences, plant grass and perform other maintenance projects.
It’s those efforts that will make a difference for the customers of today and tomorrow.
