While backpacking on the Appalachian Trail, Aaron LeMieux was amazed at the number of disposable batteries he went through to power his radio and GPS. Simultaneously, he was very aware of his kinetic movement step after step, week after week, as he hiked the trail. Thus, he envisioned an opportunity — a disruptive technology — and Tremont Electric LLC was born.
LeMieux engineered the patented nPower technology to harvest electric energy from kinetic movement. Tremont Electric’s first application of the nPower technology is the Personal Energy Generator (PEG). The nPower PEG can easily fit into a backpack or clip onto a belt. As the user walks, the nPower PEG harvests their renewable kinetic energy to charge their handheld mobile electronics. The PEG is 10 times more effective than the only competition and nPower is scalable and has the potential to harvest energy from the waves on Lake Erie or in the oceans.
In addition, nPower has applications for the military, backpackers, people walking to work, wave power and even a Biomedical Implantable Generator (BIG).
Tremont Electric’s innovations have garnered international attention, most recently at the 2009 International Consumers Electronics Show. Investors from the government to Fortune 500 companies are interested in the technology as it has applications for the military, the urban walker, the mountain backpacker and for citizens in the developing world.
Sustainability is Tremont Electric’s leading corporate value. While the core of the company’s business is nPower technology, the method for which the company brings this technology to market will reflect its commitment to sustainability. While sustainability is a process, Tremont Electric is committed to instilling sustainability as a corporate value by using the least amount of resources necessary to manufacture, market and distribute products, educating employees, shareholders and customers regarding environmental concerns and efforts, and measuring the benefits of utilizing nPower technology.
The company currently has a fully executed, nondisclosure agreement, regarding the PEG, with a multibillion-dollar European company. This potential partner is a world leader in consumer electronics and plans to double sales of green products over the next five years to account for 30 percent of its total revenue.
