Ups and downs

(Ups) to Diebold, which recently landed a $28 million contract to provide San Diego County, Calif., with 10,000 touch-screen voting systems. The Canton-based company continues to overcome questions about the systems’ security as it lands new deals.

(Downs) to the Cleveland Indians. The team can afford to spend $7 million to install “the largest full-color light emitting diode (LED) video display at any professional sports facility in North America” but can’t afford to sign any free agents to shore up team. One the positive side, at least we’ll be able to see the hijinks on the new big screen.

(Downs) to Newell-Rubbermaid. The company pulled the plug on its Wooster Rubbermaid operations in December, taking with it the city’s largest employer. This is the final piece of multi-year drawn-out saga that witnessed Newell’s takeover of the once-venerable regional company and its systematic withdrawal from the area.
