Dr. Hiroyuki Fujita identified a need for better radiofrequency coils in manufacturers’ MRI equipment and made it happen.

Previously, Fujita had worked as a professor, a researcher, and a staff scientist and director of engineering at a major multinational corporation. Then in 2006, drawing on that background, he started Quality Electrodynamics LLC while working as director of imaging physics at Case Western Reserve University.

With the help of a few CWRU colleagues, Fujita developed a smaller coil to be used in MRI equipment, which makes the imaging process more efficient and timely, thereby decreasing the amount of time that a patient has to spend in an MRI machine.

Fujita’s research and development company has strong connections to myriad clients, as he recognizes the importance of building relationships in securing the most advantageous solutions. QED has strong relationship with GE Healthcare Technologies, Siemens, the state of Ohio and the Japanese government. Many of QED’s clients are competitors in the medical industry, yet Fujita is able to satisfy all of them with his company’s unique, entrepreneurial qualities. With a commitment to operating at a research and development level, Fujita has set QED up for avoiding commoditization.

Fujita has grown QED independently through his own personal investment in the firm and through funding from grants. He takes pride in the fact that his company is positioned for growth and self-sustainability.

Fujita’s entrepreneurial philosophy is to take things one step at a time, and every step that QED has taken has contributed to the company’s success. He also has a strong commitment to innovation, trust, integrity and encouragement, and with these strong morals in place for his employees to follow, Fujita’s company has seen spectacular growth in just three years. The company, which got its start in a 300-square-foot room at CWRU, is now headquartered in a 27,000-square-foot facility in Mayfield Village. Going forward, Fujita plans to continue building connections with international corporations and governments to recruit his customers to open operations in Cleveland.
