Huston named director of National Education Center

Jayne H. Huston was named director of Seton Hill University’s prestigious National Education Center for Women in Business. Huston assumes the strategic and operational oversight of the center, including directing all programs and initiatives to promote women and business ownership within the regional and national marketplaces.

Dedicated to strengthening the economic impact of women business owners, Huston has served in National Education Center roles for the past 10 years, including as associate director of information and associate director, a role she held since 1997. For the past year, as transitional director, she has provided leadership for the organization’s comprehensive strategic planning process to determine how the university should most effectively meet the needs of the region’s established and budding entrepreneurs.

Under Huston’s direction, the organization’s initiatives have been featured in numerous local, state and national media, including CBS Saturday Morning, Teen Court-TV, The New York Times, Chicago Tribune Inc. and Seventeen magazine. She is a member of the United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship, the International Council for Small Business, the National Association of Female Executives, Executive Women of Westmoreland and the Westmoreland County Commission for Women & Families.

The recipient of numerous awards for her work with women business owners, she was named Region III Women Business Advocate of the Year in 2001 by the U.S. Small Business Administration. Recently, she was recognized as Pennsylvania Business Central’s 2003 Entrepreneur (Non-Profit Organization Category). Huston will serve once again in 2004 as a judge for the PA 50 Best Women in Business competition.


Mellon Financial Corp. promoted Kevin L. Shearan, head of technology delivery, to executive vice president.

Shearan is responsible for directing the activities of software engineers and application developers throughout the corporation. He also oversees the development of Mellon’s technology strategy and corporate information security.

A member of Mellon’s senior management committee since 2001, Shearan joined Mellon in 1997. A veteran of more than 20 years service in the information technology industry, he has held senior technology positions with major financial and commercial institutions in the United States and Europe.


Gordon Scherer, CEO and managing partner of Horovitz, Rudoy & Roteman, was elected to the North American Board of directors of CPA Associates International, a worldwide association of accounting firms comprising 125 firms and 250 offices in 60 countries.


Valerie Day Wilden was promoted to assistant vice president of St. Barnabas Health System. During her 20 years with St. Barnabas, she has been director of corporate affairs, director of public relations, assistant director of the St. Barnabas Medical Center and admissions coordinator for The Village at St. Barnabas. As assistant vice president, Wilden will continue serving as liaison between St. Barnabas and government officials, as Presents For Patients spokesperson and as a member of the St. Barnabas Charitable Foundation’s magazine, Faith & Work. She will continue her involvement in St. Barnabas’ public relations and marketing efforts. Her public relations experience with St. Barnabas includes national broadcast of Presents For Patients stories, including on “Good Morning America,” creation of the St. Barnabas Medical Center 5K Run/Walk.

Margaret Horton was promoted to assistant vice president of St. Barnabas Health System. She previously served as director of personnel. She will continue to oversee the personnel department, including retention and recruitment efforts, workers’ compensation and employee benefits. Horton has been with St. Barnabas since 1984, when she was hired as an accounting clerk. She co-directed an effort to modify St. Barnabas’ employee benefits plan with minimal cost increase to its 600 employees and the health system, while greatly increasing the level of benefits for employees.


II-VI Inc. appointed Vincent D. “Chuck” Mattera Jr. as vice president and general manager of its Compound Semiconductor Group.

Mattera will oversee the company’s eV PRODUCTS division, Wide Bandgap Materials Group and Advanced Materials Development Center, which will be collectively referred to as the company’s Compound Semiconductor Group. He will be responsible for the group’s technical direction, product roadmap, manufacturing strategy and operational performance.

Mattera began his career as a member of the technical staff at AT&T Bell Laboratories in 1984. As a department head and director there, he led the Semiconductor Laser Development and Manufacturing Organizations, and managed the introduction into volume manufacturing of several generations of process and device technologies. Later, he became vice president of Lucent Technologies’ Optoelectronic Devices Organization. From 2001 until 2003, he held the position of vice president and general manager of the Optoelectronics Division at Agere Systems.

Prior to joining II-VI, Mattera founded Avalanche Thinking Inc., an optoelectronics-focused management consulting company. He is a former director of II-VI.
