Turning a low-tech industry such as key duplication into a source of opportunity may seem like a difficult task, but for Michael A. Bass, the mission was key in reinventing the family business. Since 1949, Hy-Ko Products Co. has supplied retailers with signs, keys and key accessories.
Bass, with his entrepreneurial drive as president and CEO, transitioned the company over the past 20 years from a small business into a global corporate organization. By adjusting to changing brand management, merchandising practices and technologies, Bass has helped make key duplication easy and accessible for retailers and consumers. Within the past five years, Hy-Ko has developed the KID (Key Identification and Cutting) system, which accurately identifies thousands of different key blanks by using optic technology while maintaining easy-to-use and reliable software. This patent-pending advancement in key duplication has engineered great commercialization.
Today, Hy-Ko supplies KID to major retailers, providing a system that associates can easily use. Already, 100 Wal-Mart stores in Florida have the KID system, making key duplication easy for retail associates and consumers. Wal-Mart has seen the benefits of the system through double-digit sales growth in the field, and Hy-Ko plans to install the KID system into thousands of retail outlets nationwide.
Besides expanding Hy-Ko’s key duplication industry, Bass has helped expand the company’s presence in the community. Hy-Ko raises money for nonprofit organizations, such as the Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital, the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association through an annual golf outing for the past five years. These outings draw in more than 200 participants who contribute time and money to support local charities.
Hy-Ko also has a long history of supporting the Children’s Miracle Network. Bass is not only committed to helping the community, he is committed to expanding Hy-Ko through intellect and an entrepreneurial spirit.
