John Crum’s Seaman Corp. is built for speed and longevity

“The structure that we’re installing today is probably the most aggressive approach that we’ve taken in the last 20 years.”
The company is developing new products and then looking at new markets to find applications that didn’t use fabric in the past, aiming to replace fiberglass, steel or other materials.

“The DNA of Seaman Corp. needs to be to use our innovation and our technical capability to solve applications, tough applications, for customers,” Crum says. “And those niche markets will be Seaman’s success.”

Takeaways:

  • Meet changing market forces head-on.
  • Adapt internally, focus externally.
  • A recruitment strategy is an investment in your future.

What hobby or recreational activity do you wish you had more time to indulge? I’m very much into the show cattle business. I have a little hobby farm.
For some people their hobby is a boat. Mine is to go out in my barn and feed and fit cattle. It’s very relaxing for me. It’s how I get up in the morning — I feed the cattle in the morning. I spend a half hour in the barn in the morning and when I come home I unwind on the farm also.
It’s 32 acres, a barn that I refurbished — it’s 120 years old. I built a new two-story house up on the hill and put a white fence around it, and it’s just a nice setting for me. I enjoy the countryside right there.
What is one compliment you believe that even your worst enemy would have to admit is true about you? That I’m a family man. That family’s important to me.
What piece of business advice has served you best through your career? Lead with passion.
I’m a people person. To be honest, I think you’ve got to make decisions in life and move on. Don’t be afraid to make a decision. Make a decision, make the best decision you know how, and then move forward.
