The business model of Roth Bros. Inc., led by President Paul Belair, has shifted since 2006, when the management team bought the company from FirstEnergy. Since then, they have moved its focus away from being a traditional HVAC roofing contractor business to one focused on a comprehensive energy solutions strategy for national, multisite companies.
The business model implemented by Belair and his team is scalable, driven by technology and flexible enough to allow the company to collaborate with alliance partners. Overriding all of it is a companywide obsession with customer service, creating a point of differentiation between Roth and its larger competitors.
By using closely monitored subcontractors throughout the U.S., Roth Bros. is able to grow its business without adding fixed overhead costs, giving it a competitive advantage in the marketplace.
Roth Bros. also has implemented Web-based IT solutions to monitor critical customer information related to its building investments and developed state-of-the-art applications by integrating and customizing information systems that have dramatically enhanced the decision-making capabilities of customers. And Roth’s focus on customer satisfaction and its evaluation of emerging energy solutions through alliance partners provides a constant stream of innovation and product improvements.
Belair’s vision for future growth is to maintain the company’s focus on its comprehensive energy solutions strategy and take risks by investing earnings into emerging technologies and IT solutions. Roth Bros.’ future growth will come from renewable energy solutions, demand response programs, utility energy efficiency programs and the efforts of its sales force.
As the company grows its energy services business, it will allow Belair and his team to increase private, negotiated construction opportunities, a strategy that will help reduce the business cycle variability of the construction services business.
In addition to the focus on growth, Belair and his team have sponsored two major initiatives to drive a culture shift: a supervisors’ college training program and a program facilitated by the company’s human resources professionals through the use of the book “How Full is Your Bucket?” which focuses on the way the company’s leaders want employees to be treated.
