Daniel Burrus did not start seven companies and become a
respected business strategist by reacting to what others do.
So how do you avoid being in a position where you’re always
reacting to others? Start by taking an hour a week to think about the future.
“I know what they’ll think the minute they read that,” says
Burrus, founder, president and CEO of Burrus Research Associates Inc. “I don’t
have an hour. I’m really busy. That’s just because they’ve never done this
before. Take one hour a week and my coaching is to make sure you put it in your
planner and schedule it. Otherwise, you’ll be putting out fires all week and
you’ll never do it. In that hour, I want you to unplug from the present. Start
asking yourself, ‘What are the things that are happening in the near future
based on what I see taking place right now?’”
Once you have all of those things in mind, make a list of
the things you are certain about.
“Then you ask yourself, ‘Now that I’m certain about all
these things, what should I do to use that opportunity list of certainties to
my advantage?’” Burrus says. “I need to take some time to be strategic about
what are the problems and what are the opportunities that lie ahead so I can
solve the problems before they happen and seize the new opportunities before
others.”
