Like many great ideas, the idea for Matt Moog’s business was developed out of personal pain. In browsing the Internet to search for the best surgeons for his father, Moog was disappointed at the lack of credible ways for consumers to interact and share experiences with services and products. Taking into account the growth of social websites happening around him, he recognized the opportunity early on to tap into the social Web, specifically, by utilizing it to connect consumers who were dealing with similar problems.
In developing Viewpoints Network LLC, a social reviews platform for consumers to discuss their experiences and opinions about everything from coffeemakers to car seats, Moog’s biggest obstacle was building an interactive user community without initial contributors. But that didn’t stop him. As CEO of the company, Moog knew from past business experiences the importance of bringing together a solid executive management team that could capitalize on the social Web’s potential.
By bringing on a capable team of people, many of whom followed him from his previous company, Moog was able to launch the site in 2007 with a small group of contributors. Leading the charge, Moog worked with his team to grow that small number of initial contributors to more than 1.5 million registered members to date. Today, Viewpoints also powers online communities for Sears Holding, with the MySears.com, MyKmart.com and Craftsman communities bringing in more than 30 million users since their 2008 launch.
Social Web is the focus of Moog’s business, but it also describes the culture he’s instituted at Viewpoints, one of open communication and collaboration. Company traditions such as shout outs “pass the pail” and weekly “ideaFest” challenges, foster an environment where employees can share their ideas constantly. With 90 percent employee retention, Viewpoints is now one of the fastest-growing digital media companies in Chicago and on course to become the largest product reviews site online.
