Helping with hair

Cancer is an awful beast that can devastate hopes and dreams in the snap of a finger, but the pain is stronger when its victims are children, and it’s for these tiny, innocent victims that Executive Director Mark Campo and his team at Wigs for Kids work.

When it comes to losing your hair, it can be a traumatic process, but Wigs for Kids works to help outfit children with a wig that makes them feel healthy — even if they’re not — as well as beautiful and confident. The staff works diligently to connect with the children so they can best understand what will please them. Part of this comes from spending time with the founder, Jeffrey Paul, because his enthusiasm and care for the process constantly permeates everything and everyone around him, which challenges everyone to meet him at the same level of care and passion.

Additionally, Wigs for Kids has a built-in accountability system to make sure the ball never gets dropped. After all, it’s the child’s self-image that’s at stake. To make sure everything goes smoothly, there are at least two people who work with every patient so that appointments don’t get missed, or if someone is sick, they don’t have to cancel on the patient.

But Wigs for Kids customers aren’t just the kids receiving wigs. They are also the hospitals that refer patients to them, the donors who write generous checks to help the cause, and the women who cut and donate their ponytails in hopes of helping others. With so many constituencies, staff members are quick to add a please and thank you in their conversations and want to make sure everyone in the process is delighted with the results.

All of these efforts ensure that these tiny customers all the way up to the big customers who help in the process are all taken care of.
