Cleaning up

The journey for Bob McDonald started in 1973, with $3,000 and a bit of fatherly wisdom.

“Don’t borrow more money if you miss a payment,” McDonald’s dad said while inking the loan that would start Modernistic Carpet Cleaning Inc.

As it turns out, that $3,000 was enough to help McDonald buy three cleaning machines and a newspaper ad. Since then, McDonald, the owner and president, has grown his company into Modernistic, a carpet and furniture cleaning company that tackles the offices of some of the best-known companies in Detroit and also services nearly 2,000 homes each month.

McDonald has made the journey from that stiffly policed loan with a two-pronged approach to growth: investment in technology and investment in people. By constantly buying the latest technology in the field, Modernistic has stayed well ahead of the industry curve. And McDonald’s people strategy is based on an old-fashioned work ethic and loyalty. He wants his employees to put in a good day’s work, but he ensures that such service is rewarded fairly and with a family atmosphere.

Aside from comfortable living benefits that include a 401(k), paid vacation, medical coverage and bonuses, Modernistic also rewards performance with Mod Bucks, which are won through impeccable appearance, knowledge of relevant business information and record-setting quotas. At the end of each month, Mod Bucks can be exchanged for real cash.

These strategies have helped McDonald and Modernistic to clean up in a tough economy. With strong people and technology, the company has gained market share from fledgling companies and has grown to 71 employees.
